NotesA birth registration was found for Bridget McCooey: Year of Registration: 1895; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Liverpool (1837-1934); County: Lancashire; Volume: 8b; Page: 127. Parents: Michael McCooey and Mary Stokes.

In 1901, Bridget McCooey, 5 years of age, was residing at 1 Union Terrace, South Everton, Lancashire, England. Other family members included: (twin) Edward McCooey, 7; Mary McCooey, 31; Michael McCooey, 32, general labourer; (twin) Patrick McCooey, 7; Thomas McCooey, 1; and, William McCooey, 3. (Source: 1901 Census of England; Class: RG13; Piece: 3480; Folio: 190; Page: 27.)

One entry in her MacPherson records states Bridget was affectionately known and called "Cissie" in her stay in the home as well as Canada. Another entry notes that Bridget referred to herself as being Mabel not Bridget.

All of the McCooey children were separated by the Catholic Welfare Agency in 1901 in Kirkdale, Liverpool, England and held at a home called St. Vincent's Orphanage. Edward, Patrick and Bridget McCooey were there until they were sent to Canada to be placed as farm workers at separate times. The twins never saw each other again once they left each other at St. Vincents Orphanage. Bridget was 6 at the time of sheltering. There is only mention of 2 younger bothers in her life, ages 5 and 2. Her twin brothers were separated from her and the other siblings at the time of shelter. (NOTE: The twins were 9 at the time.)

In 1907, Bridget McCowey, 11, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 101 children from Mrs. Birt?s Liverpool Sheltering Home en route to Knowlton, Quebec, Canada. (Brother Edward McCoovey, 12, arrived in 1905 with the Catholic Emigration Association; and brother Patrick McCovey, 14, arrived on the Tunisian in 1907 with the Catholic Emigration Association.)

Bridget was placed into a good Canadian home. She appears to have enjoyed her family in Canada and wrote to England's home care periodically as a young girl.

On May 31, 1920, Mabel McCowey, 22, single, student nurse, entered the United States through the port of Buffalo, New York. She declared that she resided in Kemptonville, Ontario, Canada; that her contact in Canada was her mother, Mary Dickinson, who resided at Kemptonville, Ontario, Canada; that her final destination was Warren, Pennsylvania; that she carried $50 on her person; that she would be staying at the State Hospital in Warren, Pennsylvania; that she would be remaining permanently. She was described as 5 foot 4 inches in height; medium complexion; brown hair; blue eyes. She was born in Liverpool, England.

She rose above any stigma and, apparently, graduated nursing school in 1923, eventually working as a nurse in Washington, Pennsylvania. During this time, she wrote that she was very smitten and quite serious with a young man by the name of the name of Mr. Leibel.
